Axle work is among the most expensive line items in a quarry haulage fleet. Workshop managers face the same question repeatedly: patch it again or pull the unit for a full axle replacement? Spreadsheet totals alone rarely settle the argument.
What we pull from the records
For a recent engagement with a 22-truck fleet hauling aggregate in the central highlands, we tagged every axle-related job over 18 months: bearing replacements, seal leaks, hub repairs, and full axle swaps. We then matched each job to odometer readings and assigned route gradient categories (flat, moderate climb, steep haul road).
Repair history matters more than vehicle age
Two units built in the same year had opposite outcomes. Unit 7 had three hub repairs in nine months on a steep haul route. Unit 12, on flatter depot runs, had one seal replacement in two years. Age was identical; route and load pattern were not.
Our report recommended full axle replacement for Unit 7 before the next wet season. Unit 12 stayed on watch-list status with quarterly inspections.
Questions we ask the workshop foreman
- Is the vibration constant or only under full load on grades?
- Did the last repair address the bearing or only the symptom (leaking seal)?
- Are tyre wear patterns uneven on that axle position?
Answers rarely appear in accounting exports. They come from standing in the yard with someone who has grease on their hands.
When we advise replacement
We typically recommend replacement when repeat repairs on the same axle position exceed 60% of new axle cost within 12 months, or when vibration reports persist after two hub rebuilds. These thresholds adjust for payload and route severity.
